We’re delighted to announce that Sophie Fairhurst has joined the Family & Divorce team at RLK, moving from the firm’s highly regarded Insurance Litigation department.
Sophie brings a wealth of experience in complex and sensitive matters, having supported clients through challenging disputes and high-stakes negotiations and disputes. Her move into Family Law reflects both her passion for helping people and her ability to handle emotionally charged situations with empathy and precision.
Before joining RLK Solicitors, Sophie graduated from Aston University with a degree in Law and gained hands-on experience through pro bono work, assisting charities and small business owners with practical legal advice. She has also worked across a range of sectors including; retail, the motor trade and insurance, which has given her a strong understanding of client service and the human side of legal work.
Sophie is regularly praised by clients for her approachability and determination to get results, often described as someone who “makes a difficult process feel manageable” and “goes above and beyond.”
“A natural fit for Family Law”
Alisha Rait, Head of Family & Divorce at RLK, said:
“Sophie’s background in complex insurance and dispute work gives her a strong foundation for Family Law, where detail, strategy and empathy all matter in equal measure. She’s a natural fit for the team and brings a perspective that clients will really benefit from, both as an experienced member of the team and as a parent who understands the human impact of family breakdown. We’re thrilled to have her on board.”
Sophie on her move
Speaking about the transition, Sophie said:
“I’ve always been drawn to areas of law where I can help people through difficult times and find practical solutions that genuinely make a difference. Moving into Family Law feels like a natural next step, and I’m really excited to work with Alisha and the team to support clients as they navigate sensitive and life-changing situations.”
The importance of early advice
Sophie’s appointment comes at a time when DIY and no-fault divorce are becoming increasingly common, with more people choosing to handle separation without legal representation. While these options can seem straightforward, both Sophie and Alisha caution that they can also carry hidden complexities.
Alisha explains:
“No-fault divorce was a welcome change for many, but it can create a false sense of simplicity. The divorce itself might be administrative, but the financial and practical implications especially where children, property or business interests are involved, can be significant. Early legal advice helps clients protect their position and avoid costly mistakes later on.”
Sophie adds:
“We’re seeing more people come to us after trying to resolve matters themselves, often when things have then gone wrong. Having the right advice from the outset can make the process much smoother and give people confidence that their future is being properly safeguarded.”
At RLK, the Family & Divorce team offers discreet, practical support across all areas of family and relationship law, helping clients navigate separation, financial settlements, child arrangements and issues of legacy and parentage with clarity and care.
